If you love working on fabric projects and want to create custom pieces to accent your home, you can make a decorative sequin pillow. Here are the supplies you will need for this project:

  • Pillow forms
  • Fabric of your choice
  • Beads, sequins, trimming, or embellishments of your choice
  • Beading thread
  • Scissors
  • Head Pins
  • Sewing machine

Once you have everything together, follow these 3 easy steps:

Step 1: Cut fabric

Measure and cut your fabric according to the size of your pillow form. Cut a piece to cover the front of your pillow form, and one for the back. If you want to make a case that can be removed later for washing, remember to cut your back piece into 2 pieces which will allow for an opening. If you do so, also remember to make each of your back pieces 2 inches wider so you can hem down the middle on each side so your pillow won’t have any open threads sticking out.

Step 2: Decorate

While you can use any thread you wish, beading thread is more study for adding beads, sequins, or any other embellishments. You can create your own designs by beading your decorations together and sewing them on the fabric. After they are sewed down, use a your scissors, to cut your thread neatly. In order to achieve a cleaner cut, you may want to use a Gingher scissor thread nipper as it is made to cut beading thread.

Step 3: Prep and sew

Once you are done decorating your pillow, it’s time to sew it together. If you are making a removeable pillow case, place the pieces inside-out over your pillow form, and use your head pins to pin the fabric together on one of the edges. You can then remove your pillow form and sew that side of your pillow case using your sewing machine, removing the pins as you go along and continuing around the rest of the edges, sealing the sides together.

If you are not making a removable cover, place your fabric pieces decorative side up over your pillow form. Pin them together on each side with head pins, and sew them together, removing the pins as you go along. If you want to hide any rogue threads and create neat edges, you can also attach trimming to add a more decorative touch.

You now have a beautiful decorative pillow that you can use to liven up that bare sofa, or boring bedspread! Let us know how you use your decorative pillows in the comments section below.
