Yarn bowls are colorful, stylish and useful. These easy to make bowls can be a great craft activity for kids as well as adults. Not only will you spend more quality time with your kids but they also make presents for a variety of events and occasions. Follow these steps in creating the perfect yarn bowl for friends and family.

What you need:

  • Scrap yarns of assorted colors
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 4 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • One bowl
  • One plastic bag

What you’ll do:

  • Choose a bowl and wrap it with plastic bag

Firstly, pick a bowl of your choice. You can select a big, small or medium sized bowl. Wrap this bowl with a plastic sheet or bag. Use duct tape on the inner side of the bowl so that the plastic sheet stays in its place.

  • Pick vibrant yarns

Yarns will make or break the overall look and feel of these bowls. Select cheap acrylic yarns for this project. You can choose an affordable package comprising of ten strands if you already have some strands available at home. You can also check out Boye and M C G Textiles yarn collection. Along with some cheap acrylic yarns, you can take a look at variegated yarns. Spinrite, Premier Yarns and Pacon offer variegated yarns which give a gentle striping effect. You can check out various colors online before making a choice.

  • Prepare the mixture

Once you have covered the bowl properly with plastic sheet, you can start making a mixture of flour, water and sugar. Mix half cup of flour with 2 cups of lukewarm water. Meanwhile, boil 2 cups of water in a sauce pan and remove it from heat once it is warm. Now add the flour mixture to this water and boil it once again while mixing constantly. Remove the mixture from heat after it is boiled. Add 3 tablespoons of sugar to the mixture, stir and let it cool down.

  • Dip the yarn into flour-glue mixture

Once the mixture is cool, place the yarn gently into the mixture and then take them out. Don’t forget to squeeze the yarn gently on their way out. This will let your bowl dry quickly and easily.

  • Coil the yarns around the bowl

You can now wrap your bowl with the flour-glue mixture treated yarns. You can wrap the bowl completely or you can create a specific pattern on it. Customize it with a name or message to give it a more heartfelt feel.

Home-made yarn bowls can be great birthday presents. You can make some of them with your kids for Grandparent’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or any other special occasion. So, make some colorful yarn bowls and surprise your loved ones on their special day!
